Seemed a good idea until my better half saw the faucet
Great skills, both as artist and in handywork.
The faucet comment should appeal to anyone who has ever "messed" with silver nitrate.

All good plans start on the back of a napkin
From the article “…poor quality 1/4 in. plywood.”
The extra expense of hobby store plywood is definitely worth it in this type of application.
They could have made it from waste wood with the same ease ...... lowering the price even further
It certainly looks like what one would expect from a ten hour project, though with practice, it could probably be done in less than half the time. Something appropriate not for the fireplace mantle, but the fire itself. Who knows, but maybe he'll get a woodworking itch from this and someday end up making something nice. We all gotta start somewhere; but Home Depot is a miserable place to start.
The wet plates made look good from here!
