There are only three types of mounting flanges; too big, too small and wrong thread!
HI Stuart
I think I know you from another camera forum so nice to see you here too.
I have used a long clamp directly on the Ries or levelling head, with a large plate which gave a very strong coupling (no flex and shake).
Kirk QRC-4.2 Arca-Type Quick Release Clamp
Arca-Swiss Universal Camera Plate 3/8"
Or you may try the RRS panning base on the Ries head if the screw of the Kirk does not clear the base. But that only has a 50mm clamp compared to the 80mm of the Kirk
Really Right Stuff PC-LR Round Panning Clamp
Have you looked at 3 way head like Oben PD-117 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head? You get movement in 3 directions and it comes with Arca type plate compatibility so you can use a long plate and move back and forth if needed. I have the Manfrotto XPro 3 way which works fine for my lightweight cameras, but I wish it had the arca plate compatibility without adding another layer. Gitzo makes one rated to 28 pounds.
The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.
