    Ground Glass--repair, replacement-----

A good number of years ago, the forum members suggested a source for ground glass--an individual who made ground glass for specific cameras. I have lost that source--Please provide again as I may need to replace mine.

But a further question---that ground glass which I ordered long ago now has issues---the "etching material--a white coated substance" on one side of the ground glass is "wiping off" when the ground glass is cleaned which affects my ability to fine focus on the subject. Can that "etching material"(???) be replaced in some manner or will I have order a new ground glass??????(and not wipe the inside glass)----your thoughts?????

    The source again is??????

The ground glass is for a rare Scovill Albion 6.5 x 8.5 Field camera which is undergoing re-construction.

    Thank you

Depending where you are in the world you should be able to find a ground glass manufacturer.

Here in the US (near Atlanta GA) Maxwell Precision Optics is popular.
He has a Facebook page which states: email Bill at maxwellprecisionoptics@yahoo.com or mobile phone 1+404-317-6825 (call or text)

LF Camera makers may be a good resource too.

Another solution Bosscreen - uses a layer of wax between two pieces of glass - which may be what you have if it is coming off. Not quite as bright as a ground glass and changes consistency based on heat or cold.
The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

Why don't you make one yourself? It's not difficult.

if the frosted layer is just painted on you could try stripping it and repainting with frosted glass spray paint. or if you can get your hands on a broken lcd monitor you can salvage some paper thin frosted plastic that works great as a ground glass.

One note is that the registration distance of the ground glass (T distance on film holder) varied a lot for different plate/film cameras of that era. I've seen cameras where the ground glass was flipped to try to compensate for that.

Further to Jon's comment, my 8x20 Korona Panoramic View had the ground side of the GG, on the outside of the camera i.e. the side opposite of the lens.

Richard Ritter identified this for me, and re-installed it the more conventional was, and shimmed it to correct the T-distance.

That was apparently standard for that time / camera to install it in that manner.

    Good luck in your efforts,

    Len
