I had the same problem working in bright conditions with a converted D800, and solved it with a similar solution to your viewfinder. But it is hard to find one that fits well and does not get knocked off easily.

One of the solutions is to photograph just before or after the sun rises or goes down. IR light is also very beautiful in these conditions. The attached images of palmettos was madey just a few minutes before the sun went down. I also like to photograph palmettos back lighted in full sun, it is really a spectacular look on the LCD.

That is a nice image. I have shot infrared in subdued light as well. Sometimes it works for me, sometimes it doesn't. I still have not found the key.

I did look at the Nikon z6 for a possible full spectrum candidate before I got the D810. But in the end, the cost would have been higher for a lower MP camera. I was also not comfortable using a plastic FTZ for my expensive lenses, and I could not afford to replace them with Z equivalents. Maybe in another life. I must work with what I can afford, even if it would be nice to have mirrorless and an EVF.

    Jon, Peter, Tin Can

I appreciate your kind comments about my IR work. But to be honest it is in fact fairly difficult to understand what kind of lighting conditions work best for the kind of images you want to make. I learned a lot in working with IR with medium format and LF film cameras, which was less complicated than digital IR in my opinion, primarily because the range of possibilities is much more limited. But even with that previous experience, using digital IR cameras has been a constant learning experience, as is the method of processing the files.

Regarding specific equipment, even with mirrorless cameras I prefer to focus and compose on the LCD whenever practical, and the converted Nikon D800 gave great results, am sure the D810 will as well. One of the major attractions of mirrorless cameras is that the film to flange distance is much less than with film cameras and DSLR. This fact allows you to use, via inexpensive adaptors, virtually every piece of glass ever made for film and digital FF and medium format cameras. So when you buy a mirrorles camera there is no reason to buy new lenses if you are comfortable with manual focusing, and the image quality of your existing lenses.

    2021:09:11 15:42:13 : NIKON D810 : 200mm : 180 ISO : F7.1 : 1/30 sec : 5/3 EV

I finally got a 720nm filter that fits my AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G ED VR lens. It was back ordered when I bought the Nikon D810.

I'm going to order the same set of 5 filters I got for the 24-70 lens that I have been using. It takes a while to get something shipped from China!

By the way, at 100% you can read the whole label on the black vertical part near the foot rest. This shot was hand held.
