I've seen this as well in foliage, could it be areas of highly active photosynthesis? Rather than the older and somewhat jaded growth?

Maybe someone with the appropriate biology / physics knowledge could enlighten us as to what's going on here...

I remember reading online that chlorophyll levels vary within the same tree/bush/whatever. This could account for the difference in tones.
We need a photo biolgist!
