Carbon Transfer Workshop, Oct. 20 - 23, 2021, Yosemite Valley

Jim Fitzgerald and I will be teaching an intensive hands-on workshop on carbon printing at the Ansel Adams Gallery this coming October.

    https://shop.anseladams.com/collecti...arbon-printing

This is an all-film workshop. Participants will have two photographing opportunities (an afternoon and a morning session) to use supplied 8x10s and film in Yosemite Valley, with help and direction from the instructors...and/or use their own cameras (up to 8x10). I will develop the students' film in the evenings (rotary, PyrocatHD) and these are the negatives we will be printing with for the workshop.

The workshop size is limited to 6 students to best work with the space and provide the best experience for the participants. I have been told that as of two weeks ago we had three spaces available.

Below is the tenative schedule to give you an idea how it will go...with many small tweaks possible depending on weather and participants' desires.

    Wednesday, October 20

9am Meet at Ansel Adams Darkroom (behind Gallery)
    Introductions
10:00 About the Carbon Printing Process

Participants sensitize tissue for afternoon use.
    10:30 Demo printing preparation
Participants start their first exposure (w/ pre-sensitized tissue)
    Demo Transfer bath/Developing
    Participants Process their prints
    Noon Lunch
1:00 Continue printing (using tissue sensitized by students)
    5:00 Done for the day

    Friday, October 22

Time? Early morning photo session at Sentinel Bridge
9:00 Examine dry prints from Thursday
9:30 Sensitize tissue for afternoon use
10:30 Start printing with pre-sensitized tissue
Lunch and then more printing until 5pm

    Saturday, October 23

9am Meet at darkroom. Examine negatives from the day before
Participants sensitize tissue for afternoon use.
10:30 Participants start their exposures (w/ pre-sensitized tissue)

Come and experience the magic of Yosemite during my favorite month in the park, October! This will be a great hands on workshop with two accomplished carbon printers. Also, the Yosemite Renaissance 36 will be opening at the Yosemite Museum Gallery on the 22nd during the workshop. I'll be bringing my copy of the Survivors I carbon book for all students to get an up close look.

Please come join us as it will be a blast!

Vaughn has been printing Large Format negatives in Carbon transfer for a very long time. His knowledge of the process with LF negatives result in very outstanding prints. And Jim uses ULF negatives for his work and has created two exceptionally beautiful carbon transfer books (completely in carbon transfer including text!). I've seen work from both in person - they are exceptional prints.

So it you want to use in-camera negatives for carbon transfer, they offer the finest workshop you could attend. Highly recommended! (And in Yosemite no less!)

Thanks, Don. At this time there is one spot still open for the October workshop. Jim and I will be repeating the workshop in April 2022.

One note -- if you are thinking about taking the one spot left and plan on camping in the Valley, the campground reservations for that time period opens up at 7am (PDT) June 15th...and the trend these days is for the campgrounds to get booked quickly.

Don, thanks it is nice to receive such fine comments from a fine carbon printer and fellow workshop instructor. Yes, it will be an amazing time to be in the park. October is my favorite month to be in the park. Hopefully someone grabs the last spot quickly. The Renaissance 36 will open during the workshop and my book is included in the show. For the workshop attendees I'll give them a close up look and personal reading of the book. We always have a fun as all get out time!

    Jim and Vaughn,
I wish I could join you for this exceptional experience. My 92+ years on the planet cause me to be lacking in the energy for such a great workshop.
Have a great one, and i hope to see you again in the not too distant future. My wife and I are already planning a return to the redwoods next spring.

This workshop has filled. We have another workshop planned starting in the third week of April 2022 at the Ansel Adams Gallery.
