Thread: Which would be easier to build - 8x10 SLR or TLR?

5x7 and 4x5 Sinar Norma TLR's by Nokton48, on Flickr

"Construction Unit Design" allows me to upsize the camera to 13x18/5x7. Nice to have the larger format, I am just getting going with 5x7. 240 Componons on the left, 250 Imagon pair on the right.

    Thanks for the advice MartinP.

We only used 4x5s in our fine arts photography program and I'm just now getting into 8x10.
I just loved my Yashica TLR and thought it would be fun building an 8x10 version.
I'll probably still do it, just much later in the future haha

Wow, Daniel, very kewl setup. I'm so jealous!
Do you have any shots you've taken with them that you've posted online?

    Take care both of you!

have you seen a wisner sir ? it would not be very difficult to build a 8x10 version of that, and
you would have a leaf shutter and sync if you wanted it ..

its basically a box with a lens that has a shutter on it that has a rack and gears
there is a mirror that is a 45 degree angle to reflect up on ground glass and a film holder
put on the back at the correct placement
sure, build a sir, it wouldn't be too hard ...

you might do a dry run using 8ply mat board or foam core, .. doll house mirrors can be cut with scissors and are cheap thin and light weight ..
    good luck!

    Thanks John!

I'm not sure if I web searched Wisner properly. I didn't see any examples of the camera you described.
But thank you so much for reaching out. I think you're right about building with mat board and foam cure for a mockup.

I'll remember that in the future when one day I attempt a build.

    Thanks again

I would think that for an SLR, that the shear mass of the mirror would be a major engineering problem. Moving the mirror and its supporting gear around with any speed would require some stiff springs. Vibration and shake would be significant as well.

Another aspect of this issue might be the surface area of the mirror. Aside from physical mass, there would be a good bit of air to move out of the way. Think of quickly closing an 8x10 camera and hearing rhe woosh of air as it exits the clipped corners of the GG.

I think Gowland built a few 8x10 TLR cameras. Try looking for images of them for ideas.

There are only three types of mounting flanges; too big, too small and wrong thread!

    you're welcome..
the wisner cameras were made for a small time before the owner decided to give up on camera making.
I do not know of anyone who bought or used them, I just remember reading the ad in the back pages
of view camera magazine back when I used to subscribe about 15 years ago...
don't listen to people about the weight of doll house mirror it weighs almost nothing, comes in rolls or sheets
and can be found on Etsy, amazon and probably the big yard sale .. its cheep and thin and cuts with regular kitchen scissors.
I've probably made 15 cameras ( up to 14x28 ) the past few years and they've all been made of foam core or mat board, its fun.
if you make it of wood, look into basswood, it is light and dense ( unlike balsa ). I don't have a dovetail jig which is the reason I never made mine out of wood ...the
mirror shaft doesn't even need to be spring loaded like the graflex ones seeing it won't operate a shutter, its just being used to focus
and you will have a cable release for the lens in front ... people love to overcomplicate things. SLR's can be super simple ... unless you want it super complicated. LOL
