    DIY Wehman Inspired Project

Wehman are very rare and when they sell price is high

I propose we can do our own

    Let's discuss here

I am inspired by Wehman, function over fashion

I have never been near a Wehman or seen enough detailed pictures

    Without pictures we have nothing

I was a metal fabricator most of my life and had great access to any tool

Let's keep this public and friendly

    I am NOT proposing production

    5X7 seems ideal

I have the same idea. Only I would increase the strength of the front to accommodate more heavy lenses.
front standard more sturdy=thicker for heavy lenses

    Possible stronger diagonal front bar?

    rail

clam-shell, 2-piece alu. grey? or black

    carry handle

    strap-handle w room for double dark s

    side-bearer left cnc carbon

    side-bearer right cnc carbon

    tooth-bar

    tooth wheels

    focus lock

    side metal

    rivets

    geared focus

    geared back horizontal tilt

    repositional back frame cnc carbon

metal lift for double dark slide

    stainless springs

    cnc ground glass frame

    plastic ground glass

    fresnel

    back metal parts 1234

    black cloth Velcro?

3/8" tripod mount cnc carbon fibre

I have one and have often thought of reducing the weight via a 1"drill bit. Then I decide the extra 1.5lb isn't that much.

I have one and used my heaviest lens on the Wehman, a 4.4 pound Petzval. The Wehman moved a little more slowly, but it held the weight just fine. I think the camera is plenty strong.

It's a pain in the butt, Jim. I did mine on a small drill press using a variety of hole saw sizes. It took me 2 weeks and lots of 3-in-1 oil.
Next time, I'll take $120 and give it to my machinist, and have him make all the holes in 2 hours.
But when that weight is gone, you notice it. Mine lost about 2.5 pounds after I was done.
    Here's the finished product:

I use a Wehman that I bought used in 2007. Primary lens is a 14" Ektar Commercial. But I also have one of the Dr. Optiik 240's that I bought from Kerry Thalman and a 19" Red dot Barrel lens that I use front mounted onto an Acme #5.

The 19" is no problem when things are tightened properly. I'm not sure that I would want the camera much lighter, but I might change my mind in 10-20 years. :-)

I believe that Bruce used quite a bit of phenolic material. The really tricky part, of course, will be making the back.
May tomorrow be a better day.

    I just changed direction

On my own, I decided a copy is not best, as I already want changes

Jump right in and dream or make it happen

    Thanks to everybody so far!
