Making a photobook from darkroom prints

I have only seen Jim's first book -- a beautiful piece of art itself, in addition to the prints that make up the book.

While Jim and I tend towards a more traditional approach to carbon printing, it is amazing where the process is being taken today.

Vaughn, yes we are traditional for sure. It is crazy where the process has been going. I still love the tactile quality and richness of the images we make. The first book was a joy to complete and there will be more to come. Keeps me busy.

I have made several books from inkjet printed images, using various traditional binding methods. I started with a concertina ('Leporello') style, moved on to Japanese stab binding, and then a hand stitched book. With multiple double-sided sheets per signature/section, the latter is the hardest to lay out to get the correct pages facing each other. Adobe Indesign can handle it, but it still takes a lot of care in printing. I learned all I know from a couple of online workshops in the past year, plus the extremely practical book 'Making Books' from the London Centre for Book Arts. As others have suggested - it's addictive once you get started.

The first book I hand-bound was in 1947. The last was in the 1970s. The advice I gave in post #5 involved much newer technology.

Book making technology changes

I have made several from original hand drawn fine art prints, copied carefully with DIGI, by me

Color corrected to my eye and printed online

I did this for 5 years, my client was and still is ecstatic

He regrets my absence

Even Gutenberg...started somewhere
