Monty, this is very helpful. Thank you for the recommendation of Mr. Carnie. I'll reach out to him to see if he'd be interested in helping me with this.

    Lydia,

At the very least you should contact the Eastman museum for a valuation of the negatives. In my opinion they should not have been sold at an estate sale, but the whole lot preseved.

And, not to throw water on your project, but because you purchased the negatives you don't own the rights (copyright) to print the images, even for your won enjoyment. This subject has been covered in this forum previously with supposed Ansel Adams negatives. His estate my retain the copyright. I read the obituary in the Chicago Tribune, and at the time he had a surviving brother; if so, he would retain the copyright. My disclaimer: I am not a lawyer. But you should consult a property.copyright lawyer.

How long does copyright last? Do I need to renew my copyright?

These negatives scream to be contact printed, and that's probably the way they were originally printed by the photographer. And, they will likely be beautiful printed in that manner. A competent black and white photographer with their own darkroom could do this for you. There are many who could do this.

Don't mess with an enlarger, at least not in the first go-around.

Copyright lasts 75 years, and then transfers to the estate automatically upon death. The estate/will then comply with the wishes of the artist, and if not specified, or if contested, ends up in litigation to determine the intent of the artist. Copyright can be conferred by the estate, or the estate can confer reproduction rights, but the intellectual property rights are retained by the estate regardless of who holds the property unless conferred with the property. Violation of copyright can carry hefty penalties of all parties involved, and if willful penalties can be triple. You are obligated to contact the estate or any living relative to obtain permission to make reproductions, and they may charge a fee regardless of whether it is for personal use or not. Further, they can require you document the number of copies made.

Search the forum for Ansel Adam glass plate negatives found.
