Scanning Workflows - Your Best Tips & Tricks!

I thought this might be an interesting topic for a thread. Many of us will have scanned prints and negatives in large quantities, and in so doing, have developed some tricks for getting better scans or easing the process.

For one, I would love to know how you guys keep your prints straight within flatbed cameras. You can align it against the edge, but that crops the outer edge of the print. Has anyone made a jig for keeping prints straight but away from the glass edge?

I'll start us off with my own tip: When blowing air on photos to remove dust, hold the photo upside down. That way, dust is more likely to fall away from the item, instead of transfer to another spot on the image.

I scan negatives (MF to 8x10) on my Epson flatbed using wet mounting techniques. I scan at full resolution to archive and this file is never changed. All downstream use is usually a down-sampling of that "raw" file. I do make a few prints from these files, but mostly they're used to generate digital negatives for pt/pd printing. Personally, I've never scanned a finished print.

Interesting. Do you use VueScan to produce those digital negatives?

Even with film in a holder, the scanned image will not likely be perfectly straight.
Requiring rotation and the percentage of rotation may vary widely.

All scanning done in VueScan for now, intend on giving Silverfast v9 a look, I could never get in sync with v8, with Epson flatbed. I also don't do much correction in VueScan... I save most of that for my editing software...

All editing done in Capture One or Affinity. Have done limited printing.

Waiting on my first Large Format Negs to scan, as of yet have only scanned 35mm to 6x17... and most things in between...

Here's my tip. Have a strong drink available when you first start doing it and lock up all firearms.
