8x10 macro lens

Hi,

I have been shooting landscapes and portraits using my 8x10 camera for two years now and consider myself still on the learning curve.
I would like to start shooting some dead dragonflies and other mammal skulls I find in nature.

I found Nikkor AM ED 120 and 210mm lenses for sale in Germany. Is the 120mm better suited for 5x7 ? Wich one would better fit an 8x10 camera.

Jack, it all depends on budget. Nikon and Schneider both made 210 mm macro lenses that will do for you. Expensive. A good grade of process lens (dialyte type Apo Nikkor, Apo Ronar, Apo Saphir, G-Claron, ...), focal length around 240 mm will also do, finding one in shutter or whose cells will go into a shutter may be a problem. Same is true of enlarging lenses.

I’d use a 240 G-Claron. Best bang for the buck.

At small f/stops and long bellows extensions, you won't need a shutter. As Dan said, process or enlarging lenses are good economical choices.

120 and 180 Apo Macro Sironar are corrected for 1:5 to 5;1. 210 and 300 Makro Sironar were corrected for 1:3 to 3:1. But on these you have to reverse the lens groups for work larger then 1:1. Pictographs on the barrel guide you.

At £39, the best bang for buck would be a 210mm Apo-Gerogon. A bit dimmer than f5,6, but sharp at f22. If you need a shutter, any of Salomons mentioned lenses will do.

Some years ago I asked a similar question and got the same people telling me what you are getting now. Expert advice!

They all mean well, but I like to try things

I shot a 300mm plasmat because that's what I had

Took 2 days to set up and shoot this on 11x14 X-Ray, cropped to about 9X9" after. It was about 2.5/1 with studio strobes, hard to focus and light

This is what I got and I am happy with it

Maybe this year I can find a 17 year locust and try it
