Non-metric filter sizes / custom filters

    Two related queries:

    1) does anyone know of a resource / information on non-metric filter sizes (I've looked in the excellent 'Where to look...')? For instance I have an Ilex Paragon 12" f4.5 (in a whopping Ilex #5) with a threaded front that is around 3.155" (just over 80mm), a size that doesn't make any sense to me. Or maybe it is a 'Series' size?

    2) I have read of people using foam board ('foam core' I think you might call it in the US?) and (IIRC) 'gels' to make custom filters, and this would seem to be a simple and easy solution. I'm familiar with all sorts of filters but not gels, what would I be looking for (I'm in the UK but should be able to find equivalents)? Or is there a better material? I primarily shoot black and white, so yellow, orange and red.

Any previous experience, advice or ideas much appreciated

Thanks.. Am I right in thinking that gels are for lighting? Are they optically good enough for image taking (having said that, I'm quite partial to a bit of soft focus)?

Ah yes, years ago I bought some IR filter material from them for a D200 DSLR conversion. https://www.edmundoptics.com/c/color...-filters/618/# looks promising...

I have just hung Rosco gels with a bit of Gaff tape in front a 6" diameter lens

The biggest screw in filter I have is https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...ellow_022.html

I forgot to add the 122mm filter mounts 'good enough' to a non metric Kodak 405 lens
