    Crown Graphic 4x5 Flash Question

I have a Graflex Crown Graphic with a Supermatic 'X' Shutter.

I would like to try using flash with the camera, but even after looking at the manual/online, I am not sure how to do this - I'm new to large format.

The manual says these shutters are synchronised only for firing Class X high speed electronic flash units.

My issue is, how then do I go about connecting a flash to the camera?
Do I just need a cord that connects from the synchroniser contact posts to the camera - the 2 pins?

    Hope you can help!

Edit: I'll add that the shutter does not feature the little switch that goes from M to X Sync - but the shutter is specified as a 'X' Shutter in the manual, so I think it then does work with electronic flash?

Re: Crown Graphic 4x5 Flash Question

If your shutter has a bi-post synch connection and it has electronic flash synch capability, then yes you would need only a cord to connect from shutter to the flash. You don't state the flash model, but I suggest two cords- a bi-post to PC female and a PC male to your brand of flash. You might be able to find one cord that goes from bi-post to your flash connection. Many modern studio flash units use 1/4 phono plug or 1/8 mini plug.

Thanks for the reply - As yet I don't have a flash for the camera yet. Is there anything to consider with the flash?
Yes the camera has bi-post connection I think - the 2 prongs at the side of the camera for connection.

You will need a flash with a PC cord socket.
Many modern low-end flashes have only a "hot shoe", where the sync connection is at the bottom of the mount that slides into a camera flash "shoe"

Note: Some “flashes” may have a proprietary connector rather than the standard PC. Make sure both the flash and cable are compatible. Paramount can build virtually anything you need.

Can’t go wrong with a Vivitar 283 or 285. Powerful, reliable, cheap. The 285 lets you dial in output for fill flash. I put a “cold shoe” on top of my camera. You could do or use a side handle. You’ll need an adapter for the bi-post to the female pc which you can plug into the vivitar proprietary cord.

+2... I had Paramount make a bi-post to Vivitar cord. Fewer interfaces increases reliability.
