The other option is to buy a new scanner and sell it for most of what you got it for when you're done. (assuming you don't want to buy more used scanners)

    Hello.

B&W negatives and 6 to 7* times enlargement... I would go for the Epson. 40" isn't a lot for 5x7 original. 40" becomes a lot for a cropped (different ratio) digital camera. So this were you want to stitch and when the difficulties arise.
Of course if you have said "I want 40" prints out of 35 mm chromes..." It would have been a different story ;-)

Still, you have to find one... Good luck.

    *7 Times is only 2100 dpi/300

Where are you located? I have done some scanning for friends using my Creo. Great scans and cheaper than buying a whole set up if you don't need it often.

An Epson V700 will make very large detailed scans from large format film. 5x7 will scan like a dream. Spring for the fluid mount adapter (if it allows for 5x7...can't recall if it's just or 4x5). Camera scanning rigs are expensive to do well. Personally I went with a Pro flatbed and I'm not going back to camera scanning until I have to.

Epson was dumping Epson 5X7 Wet Mount kit last year for a very low price

I bought one for my V700

Look for a low mile V700 and that kit

However I vastly prefer traditional enlarging

or find a person with the scanner, ask that person to scan

even after a scan, you will need software to size it, spot dust, etc

Have you contacted the techs at your old school to see if one of them could do this for you for a few bucks?

How much work do you need to submit and how much time do you have? Could you wet print these or have access to a local darkroom?
Also depending on how many negs you have reach out to someone on here in the scanning section, reddit craiglist.
How about contact print them and then just scan with a normal scanner depending on what is required for application. Also think about the chance of your work being exhibted and is it worth $500. Also seems a bit odd that you being the artist are being told how to present your work. Good luck!
