Are you looking for fiber or RC? What surface do you prefer? Will you use it for color, monochrome or both? Does permanence matter?
Good questions. Ideally, I'd get a sampler pack and go from there. With silver halide photo paper, I like glossy fiber and semi-gloss RC paper with minimal texture. I could see using a matte fiber based finish for very large prints.
I shoot large format B&W and medium format color and would like to be able to print both.
Permanence matters but doesn't have to be extreme.
If you want cheap - try HP Universal Gloss Photo Paper in 24' and up rolls
If you want everything else good but cheap - Canson infinity Platine (semi-gloss that is perfect for both Color and B&W) , Canson Infinity PrintMaKing Rag (matte)
Sergey, thanks for the recommendations. I ordered some Canson Platine. It would be nice to have some cheaper paper too. They don't make the HP paper in 17" rolls. Any suggestions for cheap and still pretty photo paper in that format?
After trying quite a few papers I am now on Platine 100%. It works great coated with Moab Desert Varnish few days after printing (adorama ships it). Beside obvious protective qualities the overcoating eliminates both the last bits of gloss differential and overall perception of ink layer being on the paper surface (instead of in the paper coating). For test prints I just resort to 4x6 on the same paper.
Switching rolls is not fun. Being more selective about what to [photograph and] print is my way to save on printing supplies and time.
I quite like the HP Gloss. Ordered it for the sole purpose of doing print head alignment routines after print head replacements. Then, since I had it - decided to profile and print a couple of my most colorful pictures on it. Prints looked very similar if not identical in vibrancy and other characteristics to the same printed from a Light-Jet on Fuji Crystal Archive Gloss years back.
If price is right , you could probably cut a 24-in roll to make it a 17-in?
I might get some cut sheets of the HP gloss.
Thanks for the tip on varnishing the prints
