    Diane Arbus Tribute

I knew Diane Arbus photography since a child, but never knew anything about this person, until

last night as I watched the lovely tribute movie

Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus (2006) - IMDb

    Some Arbus images

THE book made soon after the suicide: Diane Arbus: Revelations

    The museum 2005

I bought THE book just now

Oren, I believe this thread belongs in LFPF public view and not in lounge

I have read the few biographies about Diane Arbus (her estate--read daughter Doone--controls everything about her quite tightly) and could not stand to watch Fur. I gave up about 1/3 way in. I recommend Arthur Lubow and Patricia Bosworth's biographies.

Quite by chance, I came across this video in a post on Photrio about printing Diane Arbus' work:

I was so lucky to attend the Diane Arbus "Revelations" exhibit at the Met in '05...very comprehensive/inclusive - including (in addition to lots of images), Diane's darkroom setup, a few of her cameras, and a very interesting large sheet featuring a multitude of Diane's "practice" signatures...providing some additional insight I think!

As an aside, there is an interesting (at least in terms of contextualization) take on Diane Arbus and her work by Susan Sontag in her book - "On Photography."

Her "Magazine Work" book from 1984 is one of my usual print flatteners. I always flip through a few pages when using it. What an extraordinary person!

Her portraits make me think that what she was really doing was looking in a mirror at her own tormented genius.

Drew...I've thought this also - and I've spoken with a number of others who feel the same. That being said...I think that there is always an extent to which we are all looking into our own mirrors as we pursue our various passions.
