    Preparing for a book

    Hi everyone,

so my journey with the series Happy Kids which I'm making is almost at it's final form to be printed into a book.

It's going to be a hardcover book containing the whole series (selected) carefully combined by a book designer.

But I'm looking for people who already have experience with making a book?

I'm starting from the begin again, and will scan all images (selected) again and post-process and retouch them to be prepared and printed into a book.

So I am looking for tips/hints/do's and do nots...

For the first time (yes, first time) I'm going to callibrate my screen.

    Hi Neil.

Are you planning to self-publish, or do you have a publisher lined up for this book?

If you are looking to self-publish, check this company out. https://www.starprintbrokers.com I was happy with the books they had printed for me. The quality was good, especially considering the relatively low cost.
    Proof your work in CMYK.

    Hi Paul,

No I am entirely self-publishing but am thinking about using a crowdfunding site. At this moment I am thinking about Kickstarter.

The book designer told me to:

Save as TIFF or PNG en already in CMYK profile. At least 300 PPI.

I had a good experience with Bookmobile as a printer. I believe they also provide fulfillment services. In any case, once you have settled on a printer be prepared to modify your files to conform to their specifications.

Well, the book designer already work wih a printer company who have great experience in printing books (photography, read, etc...)
But I'm more interested about what I should keep in mind while preparing my images to send of to the book designer.

So I contacted the book designer about print profile and she told me the next:

Printprofile is CMYK 300DPI PDF X-4: 2010 concerning 2012 conditions.

Does that make any sense to you guys?

It means the pages finally need to be in the PDF form for which your designer will have the Adobe PDF program or similar. Likely you will give your designer the files in TIFF form and they will put the images and subtitles in the complete document and change it to PDF read only work file.

That is how the final book file is to be delivered to the printer, something the designer will do. It says nothing about the image profile or type to be supplied to the designer.
