    Question Tripod for Calumet CC-400

    Hi,

I recently got the Calumet 4x5 view camera for free and I need to get a tripod for the camera

Was hoping to get some info on a tripod I could get or a quick release mount.

    Thanks!

Depending on your budget, I'd recommend one of those new, carbon tube tripods or a used aluminum tripod from eBay.
Many tripods are sold in kits, with a ball head and a clamp, maybe even a quick-release plate, but your tripod needs will be more demanding.
Your camera is heavier and longer than a DSLR.

I bought my first real tripod from KEH, this exact thing https://www.keh.com/shop/tripods-bog...mn-717281.html

Big heavy and sturdy, which is good if not hiking

KEH 'Bargain' is really good, free shipping and free return for 180 days

I still use it 10 years later

I've got the same, bought via CL from a guy using it for video. Solid. I bought extension legs for it, but they're either the wrong ones or I need a locking collet(?) or some such to keep the extensions extended. Love the thumb release for all legs at once in the studio.

I thought there was a third leg inside the second on the Manfrotto 058 (as it's called in Europe)?

That's what the locking collar near the foot is for, no?

Whatever tripod you get make sure that the 1/4 x 20 bolt is long enough to engage - if your CC-400 is like mine with the recessed screwed hole in the tripod block

As I understand it, some only had the two legs. That's how mine is. That's why I went for the extension legs.

I believe the Manfrotto 475B to be the better Manfrotto of the ones mentioned above. I use a 475B for binocular astronomy using a parallelogram mount, 35 to 6x7 long lens photography of moving subjects using a Manfrotto gimbal-style head, and when using the Toyo Robos 4x5 camera which is a monorail. However I find that it is too heavy and its folded length too great for backpacking and use a Gitzo G-1349 w/Arca-Swiss ball head for 6x7 through 8x10 (Toyo MII) photography when using a field camera. For the Toyo 810G I use a Gitzo Series 5 with rational head.
