NOS 1884 5X7 Dry Plate Exposed Today

From this KODAK web page it seems I have 136 year old new glass plates

I shot one 3 years ago with strobes, my hat avatar is that result

The more I read on LFPF it seemed I needed real daylight, so today at noon, light clouds, used a meter and Sunny 16 to pick a 1 second f16 exposure, but changed my mind just before shot to move to f8 at 1 sec

Here is the scan after PS contrast, I added a tint to bring out the clouds, the foreground was in deep shade, focus was on the garbage can, the splotches may be mold on back side of glass.

The secondary test was using a new Wet Plate holder from Chroma Camera. Looks like it passed, the plate fit perfectly

    Thank you David

I have about 100 NOS old plates in various sizes

Over time I will shoot them

    The boxes are aging fast

and I can clean off the glass for a new emulsion

Amazing you were able to get a decent image on such vintage plates. Sure hope you will shoot and share more of these.

Is it typical to get images from long expired plates?

I find it interesting that instructions for "Factorial Development" are included. I learned that method in the 30's, but had no idea it was used with dry plates. I still use it with some of the old films i have like Super PAnchro Press.

This is so cool. 1884? Amazing isn't? I remember as a kid back in the 80's looking through NatGeo and thinking to my self "wait, they had cameras back during Civil War, and pictures, actual photos of Lincoln? And basically using the same process I'm doing today? They used cameras during expeditions of the North Pole? I'm telling ya, it's aliens that is making our technology increase so quickly.

I didn't find the instructions in the box and now I wonder about the exact date of those plates, very hard to pin dates down as companies were melding faster than now...

But Watkins is NOT mentioned on the box

    Watkins Factorial Calculator

Spectacular. As far as the plates go, "they built better than they knew".
    Keep up the good work!
