I just measured carefully, took a deep breath and drilled the holes, right through the lensboard. Everything looks fine and the lens is now attached. All done.

Yep...either go with the backboard idea to allow for longer wood screws or drill out to put countersunk machine screws right through and secure with a washer, lock washer and nut (or blue Loctite). For an extra measure of paranoia...go ahead and paint the rear washers/nuts in flat black. I would!

I would never trust shallow-sunk wood screws in a thin board over time...no matter what the lens.

I just use a black Sharpie pen on any little screws or bolts ends. Less risk of flaking off than paint, and easier to do.

On one hand I'd agree with you, John. But, one can still support the lens with a "lens support" type of gismo....that articulated thang....and attach it to the tripod by a clamp.

On occasion I noticed there is real life outside the GG/viewfinder.
