Years (and years) ago, before wet plate photography was popular, I read somwewhere that this was the method optics shops cleaned the large front surface mirrors on telescopes prior to re coating them with aluminum.

There are only three types of mounting flanges; too big, too small and wrong thread!
You can even clean your glass plates with old collodion left overs.
