    Self Publishing LF Photo Book

I have never self published a photo book before and would like to self publish one, and want to learn
    1) your hands-on self publishing experience
    2) which company currently has better service and quality
    3) What is the workflow you use from BW negatives to a book
    Thank you in advance!

I haven’t made photo books in 5 years. I am sure there are many changes and suppliers.

I did get very cheap, $20 samples first.

    Many variables.

I would like to print a book sample first too. I still like photo books.

If you use Google you are already 90% done.

I just clicked on this link

    https://www.google.com/photos/printing/photo-books/

and was surprised to see some of my images in samples already!

    $9.99 5X7 instantly

You can always pay more for more, but try step by step increments of size and quality

Ohhh man, it has been a while since I have last published or even made a photo book. I guess the last time when I published such photo book was back in 2015. I have to agree with Tin Can, if you actually use Google you are already 90% done, and it is way way easier to publish this thing. Well, now I am thinking about making a photo book once again . However, I do not have enough time right now, as I am working on another project, and I have to find some graphic design resources for sg, as it is a great stock photo project.

I did well with Blurb in 2011. You can probably still see it (and buy a copy!) on their site.... its title is "A Closer Look", and my name of course.

I've used Google and Blurb. Been quite a while since I did blurb, but no problems. I have done some Google ones for work and it looks nice. Upload your photos to a Google Photos Album and make it into a book. Typography is pretty crude.. You can make basic captions if you want I think.

    Found you, by name

Most books ARE named 'A Closer Look'

Most likely worth doing it as the files are findable

Maybe I do it, with my selfies

    is that selfish...

Re: Self Publishing LF Photo Book

I worked as an art director and designer for many years before retiring, so I may be more exacting than some.

I have published several photo books with blurb (and their subsidiary, MagCloud). Follow their instructions carefully and use the photoshop profiles they provide. However, don't expect art/photo book quality printing, especially in black and white. Since everything is printed CMYK, a slight variation on press will give a minor color tint to the photos. And that tint can go from cool (blue) to warm (magenta) and green (yellow), not consistent but can vary throughout the book. Also, for color work remember your images are RGB and the printing is CMYK (like an inkjet printer) so monitor soft-proofing is advised.

Bookmobile did a much better job for the book they printed for me in black and white, but can be very expensive for small quantities, and their minimum run is 25 copies I think. The nice thing with Bookmobile is they provide as part of the process printed proof pages (unbound) so corrections can be made before the full press run.
