70 years ago I used split rivets to fix harness and other leather straps. Perhaps a shop that does that work now could help you. The split rivets were quicker to use, but cylindrical copper rivets that had to be swaged over a washer seemed to be more reliable. They wouldn't work so well on the 2D though.
Gerstner & Sons sell split rivets as used on their wooden tool chests.
Kinda expensive at five for $10-$12:

Mcmaster-Carr is the go-to supplier of all good things:

Im in Portugal...
ruilourosa, try looking for split rivets from luggage or hand bag suppliers in your country, you might even try
shops that do leather repairs.

I don’t know if it’s practical for you to order from the UK, but I bought my split rivets from this outfit. https://www.saddler.co.uk/?cr=3133&c...ons_and_rivets

When I re-did mine (replaced leather handle while I was at it), I used small brass screws and nuts from McMaster-Carr, on recommendation from someone here. It worked well, is easily reversible, and while not historically accurate, looks fine to me. FWIW.
Not a great photo, but gets the idea across, I hope:
