I totally agree with this. I have a 360mm Heliar I got for portraits, and actually don't like it as much on 8x10 as I do my 300/6.8 Ilex Paragon on 5x7. I feel like the Paragon's transitions are smoother and it makes the Heliar look relatively harsh. After learning this, I bought mainly American Tessar-type lenses (I shoot almost entirely portraits) and have been very happy with their rendering in portraits. But my favorite is still that Paragon.
