Tin Can
Never heard of a dipper causing swirling problems. I use Lund tanks (8x10, 12x14, 16x20). The real reason to want the stainless steel hangers is there is less mess when removing large plates (8x10 and bigger) from the tank. The rods allow you to get a hand under the plate and virtually no silver nitrate is wasted. I have a dipper for my 8x10 tank that I use when teaching and it drips a lot when taking 8x10 plates from the tank. It is fine for smaller plates.

When I pull the plate up, just before I lift it clear I rest the bottom of the rods against the top inner edge of the tank above the solution and lightly bang it against the side a couple of times. This lets some extra drips come off and wick back into the tank.
