KODAK AERO EKTAR F2.5 on EBONY SV45TE

    Hi All,
Ive just got my first 4x5 camera and I'm interested in using some vintage lenses on it, Im wondering can i mount a kodak aero ektar on my ebony 4x5 or do i have to have a camera with a focal plane shutter like the speed graphic? Thank you for your help in advance.

The question is not whether you can mount it, but how do you plan on exposing film, and for how long?

Using a fat lens in barrel such as the 7" Aero Ektar is much easier on a Speed Graphic.

Think a little about how you'd like to use the lens. Film speed, lighting conditions, and shooting aperture will tell you the range of shutter speeds you'll need. It is possible to mount a Packard shutter, top speed 1/25, in front of a lens like an AE. If that forces you to stop down much, reconsider.

The AE's only advantage over the 180s we usually use is maximum aperture. I have a number of fast lenses stripped from aerial cameras. Stopped down to f/5.6 or below they shoot no better than my f/5.6 lenses of the same focal length. Since I normally shoot at smaller apertures my aerial camera lenses usually stay home. And yes, they're all in barrel and I use them on a Speed Graphic.

Shoot film at night or with flash in dark room, or use heavy ND filter, or shoot wet plate.

It can also be mounted in a Sinar DB shutter

IIRC the Speed Graphic shutter has a lowest speed of 1/10, so you miss 1/4, 1/2 and 1 speeds, it also has T, and it's even 1/1000 able.

The ilex 5 also can be custom mounted for the AE, perhaps you may find it in shutter

Perhaps other choices are also possible, see this: https://www.angusparkerphoto.com/blo...s-in-a-shutter

Then you may use the Sally Mann shutter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o62-YMQHeoI

And a technical evolution of it, the Galli shutter : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICLG3HCDlhk&t=27s

Recently I've been practicing with the Galli shutter and it works really fine.

A salvaged Speed graphic shutter can be adapted to any camera: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAjyYixKXm8

Well, not having a shutter it has never been a big problem for many LF photographers, anyway you may start 4x5" with a regular lens having a shutter, there are many things to practice, starting with movements, and perhaps best is starting in an easy way, but if you love the AE look then no problem to start with it.

Let me recommend you this reading about some Portrait lenses: https://www.largeformatphotography.i...rtrait-lenses/

You also have other amazing lenses in shutter delivering rings, if you want that, like this today() $1000 Triotar
