If by that you mean Paramount, butterfly, beauty.....lighting, where the main light is directly above the subject's nose, and a symmetrical shadow is below the nose, then the reason that it was used is that it glamorizes good-looking ladies. Search George Hurrell, Clarence Sinclair Bull....

They would make them look up so that shadow didn't become a mustache and stretch the muscles and skin... Must have been tiring to the subjects eyes!!!

Here's a bit of background on one key component of that style of lighting: the "obie" light.

Fascinating and I get it! NOW...

I have removed eye highlights from many of my DIGI stills...

    Thank you!

If you watch movies, women are often shot with soft focus and men hard...

    Re: Hollywood Lighting

Maybe someone else can remember his website's name, but there used to be someone named Mark Wangerin ( I think?! ) who was an 8x10 photographer who specialized in portraits with a Verito and Hollywood lighting. He had a discussion board on his website and there were guests from time to time like Hurell's retoucher &c...
Last I was in touch with him ( 10+ years ago? ) he wasn't doing photography anymore but something else. He used large lights from a distance do do his work...

Good luck with your project !
