They ALL leave a sticky residue if left too long, too old, or stored improperly (too hot) either before or after sale. A bottle of PEC film cleaner is always a good idea to have on hand if that happens.

There are different strengths to painters tap and the yellow tape in the rounded, plastic box, brand is 'Frog Tape' and it's very good, if you will no be leaving it on overly long.

I use it with Acrylic paintings on fine Water Colour paper, and if anything, you simply must make sure the tap is pressed down hard enough to hold, which is no much pressure at all.

It comes off cleanly and I do no worry about acid creeping into the paper's cotton rag material.

If no strong enough, try their light green tape.

    IMO.

Lithographer's tape is good. 3M Scotch 616. This number is red transparent. Comes in black, also. Kapton tape is good in that it doesn't leave residue. It is fairly sticky. No static generation. And there is Ultra Tape. They make a huge catalog of 'tapes', some of which can be applied directly to optical surfaces without fear. We used it in aero space applications to protect precision optical flats.
