Re: Stainless Steel Sink & Oxidation / Rust?

There are many types of stainless steel. The kind involved in this instance might not have been truly weldable in the sense of no change in quality happening during that step, which means only welded seams got affected chemically. Or perhaps there was a do-it-yourself repair error involving another metal. Just rough it up a bit it down with a brown Scotchbrite pad and apply marine expoxy putty or moisture-cure marine caulking (7 to 10 dollars a tube - don't be fooled by something cheap). Metallic-color Silicone is OK but might need to be replaced after a few years. The so-called stainless sinks sold at home centers will sometimes rust within twenty minutes where ketchup or lemon juice is present. True lab-grade stainless for sinks is typically 316L.

A really good hardware store will have stainless steel wool-try that on the sink. If you can find it-ask Drew who carries it.

Have you thought about disconnecting the sink and hauling it to a body shop to get the dents hammered out?

A good thought. It would bother me eternally to live with a badly wrinkled sink like you’ve got. Worth a small investment now for a lifetime of darkroom esthetics.

there are many types of stainless steel. a magnet will not stick to true ss. also true stainless steel has to be silver soldered (a different type of weld material) not conventionally welded unless its a feric type of ss. the rust is the weld material, most types of ss are rust resistant.

Bon Ami and Vim work well on shining up SS. C clamps and 3/4 plywood boards on both sides and gently tightening should remove the dents. Comet and SOS pads will address the rust for now but it may return if the sink is not solid SS. Photographic grade is type 316, Restaurant grade is type 314 Highly corrosive environments employ type 4029 L. Either way it still is a beautiful sink. Pad the corners if it is possible to walk into it in total darkness.

Four aughts, 0000, steel wool will will work, and is used by gun owners to remove traces of rust with out damaging fine blueing.

Since these contain oil for a anti-rust agent, Pinch as small a piece with you gloved hand, the 'splinter of this wire are no fun to mess with, and .9 mil Harbor Freight rubber/plastic gloves will work, and just worry away the rusted site.

Don't touch the packing or mother wad of steel wool with wet hands or gloves and keep that in your darkroom, if this is a reoccurring issue, in a tight glass jar, with some silicone packs, to adsorb any rust causing dampness.

A regular size Home Store Package of steel wool will last you a long time this way.

    IMO.

Since these contain oil for a anti-rust agent, use a touch of Dawn dish detergent to clean away afterwards.

If you want to clean your sink, below is some advice on some simple tools and home remedies with no use of chemical detergent.
Also, when cleaning the sink, we must pay attention to the material of the sink. Most sinks are made of stainless steel and ceramic. Both sinks need different cleaning methods for maintenance.

Re: Stainless Steel Sink & Oxidation / Rust?

Warning about cleaning up 'yer old stainless sink or developing equipment to bright and shiny again... The base alloy is only moderately resistant to exposure to liquids & chems, but what provides the protection is that grayish oxide layer that forms over it... It takes a wash in a strong oxidizer (like nitric acid) to build up that layer during fabrication, or VERY long exposure to air or moving water to heal the layer over time... Leaving puddles of water or chem will cause rusting there...

To clean the rust, a good rust remover from the hardware store containing phosphoric acid will work and will oxidize the rust area somewhat... Another cheeep source of phosphoric acid is large bottles of cheap cola from the supermarket... Apply rags or paper towels over rust areas, then soak with the cola for at least 48 hours, then scrub with a synthetic green scouring pad (no steel wool, will cause future rust)... Then wash very well, and rinse well and dry every time sink is used... Over time oxide layer will form slowly, and keep chems away from former rust area...

    Good luck!!!
