Making, not Taking: Portrait Photography in the 19th Century

Davis Museum at Wellesley College, Feb 6 through June 7:

    https://www.wellesley.edu/davismuseu...nt/node/171791

"The exhibition is divided into three thematic sections. The first, Materials, draws from the Davis Museum’s extensive collection of daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, cartes de visite, cabinet cards, and tintypes to demonstrate how the genre of portraiture shifted from preciously framed and cased photographs focused on the human bust, to more elaborate depictions of sitters among high-end furnishings and whimsical backdrops. The second section, Studios Around the Globe, examines the ethnographic function of studio photography with a display of “types” from Japan, the Philippines, Egypt, Mexico, and North America. The final section, A Visit to the Portrait Studio, combines photographs with ephemera, such as broadsides, studio imprints, and posing manuals, to elucidate the experience of having one’s portrait made in the 19th century. With generous loans from private collectors, the exhibition will recreate a daguerreian-era “operating room,” outfitted with an original backdrop, antique posing props and furniture, a camera and tripod from the studio of John Roberts in Boston, and all of the tools needed to create a daguerreotype."

Thanks for this Oren. We will be visiting our son who lives in Somerville in a couple weeks and will make a point of seeing the exhibit.

Thanks, Oren. I'd love to see it, if I can get there. I have a place to stay in the area and will see if I can find reason enough to make the trek.

Thanks! I won't be able to go to the opening, but will likely be in the area sometime during the exhibit.

Way too far East, but would be great to see.

Peter Britt is a southern Oregon photographer of the 1800s whom I have enjoyed learning about. He must have photographed everyone within a few hundred miles. His home town is about 4 hours away...just not a way I usually go...I need to get there one day (a museum is there with all his equipment).

The Jacksonville museum has been closed for several years. Peter Britt's collection has been moved and as far as I know it is not on display anywhere.
