    That is a very silly trend among many mail order companies. But I’ve never experienced breakage due to it so maybe they know sometimes don’t know.

    B&H sent me a used Schneider 120 Super Symmar HM this way with the lens rolling around the box with bubble wrap on top and one side. The lens arrived severely damaged. B&H took it back with no hassle and a week later I see it listed again in “9” condition. I hoped it wasn’t the same lens.
