    Darlot Projection Lens Question

Quick question. I came across a brass Darlot projection lens while at an antique store today. When I got it home and popped it on my camera to check the focal length, I could not get anything to focus. I disassembled the lens and found that it was missing one of the elements in the rear group. D’oh!

I popped the cemented doublet on the camera and noticed that I could kind of achieve focus with it by itself. Will this group be usable as a soft focus kind of thing? If so, how can I get a rough idea of the speed of it? Or should I just consider it an investment in a pretty paperweight?

    Thanks for any help!

Yes, you can use the front achromat as a soft focus kind of thing. It would also make a nice landscape lens with a small aperture in front of it. It likely works at f8-f12. It should produce a nice sharp image at f32.

    Re: Darlot Projection Lens Question

The best way to turn it into a landscape lens is to move it to the rear of the barrel, if you can. The flat surface of the cemented doublet goes forward, not the curved. Most Darlots you cannot screw them into the back, but most F5 Wollensaks you can. You also want to stop it down to about F11, with a waterhouse stop in front of it. But wide open, it will be soft.
