Either way, it's all relatively dated but informative nonetheless. Specific films and papers have largely changed, but other things too; so the later the edition, the more useful. A big help is also to buy "Examples", which was published fully afterwards as a companion volume. It's the only one I've kept due to its reminisces and many pictures. I gave all of the how-to volumes to a younger photographer who actually needed them.

The final version is the most readable: edited in a modern style and somehow simpler to understand. I have two versions, but now prefer Way Beyond Monochrome by Ralph Lambrecht, 2d edition, as a reference (except it is the heavies book I own).

I certainly agree with Eric. Way Beyond Monochrome is one of the most inspirational and informative book I own in a large library.

I understand Ansel asked John Sexton to be involved as technical consultant when he did the new book series.
The newer series is much easier to read and understand than the first one. Better illustrated with more information.

Another good option for reference and information is the B&W photo books by Henry Horenstein.

It really doesn't matter as long as you read it. Twice!

The Zone System makes a lot more sense once you realize that it's not the Eight Commandments and just a starting point for adapting practical sensitometry to your own needs. (I don't know what Ansel did with the other two commanded Zones.)

And there should be a Zone ZERO, but the Romans didn't figure that out.

Read "The Negative" cover to cover forward to learn Plus development; read it backwards for Minus development.
