Tuco,
My first impression was of a gate preventing entry to government-owned land, and probably a long-closed military facility. The moss on the vine maples on the right makes me think the location is out near the coast of the Olympic Peninsula. The land on the other side of the fence seems to have a story rooted in the past.

I can't say who owns the land but it is on route to the Snoqualmie Falls ( a picture I recently posted in the hiking thread). It is where you turn to take a trail down the hillside to the river. If you could continue past that gate, you would probably end up on the bluff at the top of the falls. My guess it's there to prevent that.

Tuco,
Thanks for the extra detail. It clarifies the story--and reminds me to curtail my imagination sometimes.

My overly logical brain just couldn't cope with this... Surely if it is in CONSTANT USE it should be being used right now?
