Alfred Stieglitz: The Net Mender, 1894

    The Net Mender
    Alfred Stieglitz, 1894
    Carbon print, 41.8 x 54.3 cm (approx. 16x20 inches)
Art Institute of Chicago Stieglitz Collection

Another Stieglitz photograph that was new to me, which I thought others might enjoy.

The link above has many more.

Thanks! I've never seen that one before. Lovely. Note the date. Wonder where he actually took it. Probably in Europe, posed. Looks like something Emerson would have done.

Interesting how a number of prominent photographers who repudiated Pictorialism and Pre-Raphaelite stereotypes were are one time among the finest practitioners of these very styles.

He made a quick (for the time) tour through Europe and seemed to have a very high rate of keepers or at least shot quite a bit.

There are plenty of paintings in this style, so it's not a new style but avant garde for photography.

Nothing avante garde at all. Look at Julia Cameron's work well before this date, P.H.Emerson's. But I really don't care about the genre one way or the other. They all transcended the genre by how well they did it. Work this good never gets out-dated. For a lot of others, it was simply corny imitation of pre-Raphaelite painters.

I was lucky enough to see this print at an auction preview (Phillips nyc) a few years back. Great composition and printed well. Really shines in carbon.

As a carbon printer, I had no idea that Stieglitz utilised this medium. I'll have to dig deeper. Thank you for posting, Ken.

Many of the pictorialists had done some carbon printing. The carbon prints don't really look much different than the photogravures to me, but they are much more valuable.
