Edward Steichen: In High Fashion - The Conde Nast Years, 1923-1937

I stumbled upon Edward Steichen: In High Fashion - The Conde Nast Years, 1923-1937 at my local library. It's a wonderful book. Many of the photos are excellent portraits.

I have had this for a while Peter & agree! it's kind of a two book series if I'm not mistaken and I'll look around the house later as I'm pretty sure I have both. The 1st is focused on his earlier work/history w/ soft focus impressionistic work and then this one that focuses on his commercial/fashion work with both the movie industry & fashion magazines. Edward has to be one of my favorite photographers.

Edward Steichen does far more than Fashion, this was an era when image making excellence was valued and appreciated in different ways than today.

Get this book on ES, it is GOOD.

Edward Steichen shares a common history with George Hurrell, they were both Painters and understood light and composition well. Both drew from this art, craft, skill and long history of effective image making from many other past masters.

I agree on him being a favourite photographer, too. I find "Edward Steichen - Lives in photography", (ISBN-13: 978-0393066265) to be a really good book, but I am not able to say whether it is better than any others. I am not much for buying photography books, they tend to "wear out" too soon, but this one has kept its interest to me for years now.

I will give my opinion when I get the book. Arriving Dec 31, 2019 - Jan 9, 2020

Found a few images on etsy

    https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=...AAAAAdAAAAABAX

I am sure I will like it and probably have seen many images over the decades. I am 69 years old

My second and last wife was an old master type painter, Rembrandt style, took her a year to do one painting, she painted Cleveland Punks and moi.

We were collectors of 1920's things living in a 1920's Chicago apt, once the entire floor of a 5 story building, near Charlie Chaplin's Essanay studio. We lived in the old library, the original apt was divided into 6 apts. We found the blueprints in the basement and visited the current owner in the original penthouse, unrestored. Ballroom on first floor. Lovely

Additionally Marnie collected 20's clothing and wore them.

I was not doing much photography at the time, recovering from my last disaster.

    Stay tuned...

The vgc First Edition BOOK arrived, best $9 delivered I ever spent.

I am going to take this book slow. I just read the introduction written by Edward Steichen, which had me in tears a couple times. Why? Because he shows he had 'nature' but 'nurture' clearly, by mother, directed his early path. I also believe the 1890's was a period of intense innovation in many fields. Took decades to realize the technology fully.

I love his tale of accidentally kicking the tripod and liking the result. Innovation by happenstance and recognition.

    more later
