Smile Bitten by the LF Bug!

    Hello Folks,

I've succumbed to the LF bug recently and have been following some of the posts on here with interest. I've found and acquired a Horseman 4x5 LX and am eagerly awaiting delivery. The plan is to start with 120 roll film initially and then jump into sheet film. I do have some experience with MF film and have developed a few B&W rolls in the past. Looking forward to the steep (to me) learning curve of working with a view camera, setting up a darkroom, etc. I plan on shooting still life and perhaps portraits with the Horseman and am researching lenses. Any recommendations/pointers welcomed with gratitude.

    Thank you.

    Cheers!

Welcome and the LX is a great camera, I also started with one and have a few...

Sinar bellows and lensboards also fit

I use Horseman frames as adapters to bigger and older boxes, so I can use the same lensboards

Welcome and best of luck. I'm pretty new too and am also learning a lot. My advice is to stick to one thing at a time, and shoot during the day when there is ample light to see what your're doing and the results it provides.

I would skip the 120 back. It will just complicate things. If you can do 120 you can do 4x5. It's not any harder. Lens? A 210mm then a 150mm.

I'm with Kent in SD. Jump right in and get on with 4x5 sheet film.

Thanks Kent. I guess my hesitation with jumping into sheet film straight away is that I don't have my darkroom done yet. 120 film I can develop on my kitchen counter. I guess I don't know much about the paraphernalia needed to develop sheet film and need to go research that topic.

    Thanks, Mmerig.

I think my camera is being delivered today. :-) I'm looking at a Schneider Kreuznach 210mm f/5.6 APO--Symmar and might get that. I'm excited! :-)

Happy Holidays, Happy Hannukah, Merry Christmas to all you fine folks!

Welcome and hope you enjoy your new camera. For learning it doesn’t matter if you use sheet film or roll film. I’ll be the contrarian and say I’ve often found a role for roll film in a LF camera. Not all the time, and not because there’s anything easier about roll film than sheet film. Use whatever fulfills your photographic goals the best.

And happy “everything and anything” to you too, up to and including Happy Winter Solstice!
