Handheld 4x5 shooting with a wista rf and on-camera flash.

I am going to switch out the Zeiss single window RF/VF for the twin window Polaroid RF/VF which was to blame for the guy’s head bumping into the light rather than being a couple of inches to the left.

This is pretty much as close as i can focus on the Polaroid.

Look for a Speed Graphic outfit on e-Bay.

Hand-held shooting with flash is what they were designed and built for.

There are only three types of mounting flanges; too big, too small and wrong thread!

That’s why there is a mount for a flash on the side of the RF.

For hand held 4x5 protraiture there is a (IMHO) superior device:

The graflex RB Super D is Reflex !!! so it may even work with narrow DOF and moving kids. A piece of gear.

It is a crazy good glass, super sharp and multicoated. I use the 210 and the 360.

...but for portraiture you may want an smooth nature in the Out Of Focus, if you want a silky focus roll-off I would start with something like this:

This is a Xenar 180, single coated, 140€ right now at ebay, a Tessar design that in this case it may have an smoother bokeh, it is f/4.5 for selective focus or to sften skin in some cases, it also includes one of the best shutters ever, but don't cock the shutter in B or T, in B/T the lever is blocked and if you make force you brake it.

The lens you want for portraiture is a YMMV, but antique lenses may be better. Today we see intrusive and flawed Photoshop edition in digital images to make what antique lenses did amazingly well just out of the box

Understand me, the W 180 can do amazing portraits, no doubt, but read this: https://www.largeformatphotography.i...rtrait-lenses/

It is an excellent text, with some debatable personal opinions, but it tells what nuances a portraiture photographer may consider from glass.

With antique shutters you may have problems to trigger flash, internal contacts were designed for higher voltages, and an intermadiate circuit may be needed. If you have that problem you may PM me.

    Aero-Speed direct from 1951

This camera and lens were matched about 1951. Got the LN camera from the estate about 7 years ago. This year the Aero lens was sent to me, same estate. It was mounted to the lensboard way back, using a Kodak Series 8? adapter with custom aluminum matched to the Speed lens board. I added the flash handles.

I need the 2 handles, it weighs 11 lbs as pictured without 6 D batteries possible.

Today I first mounted the lens. The RF matches!

It came with negatives of an early 50's car crash. Weegee style flash in the dark of a dead man, police, 40's car and bystanders. I have no doubt this camera shot the negs, maybe not with this lens.

I may post about this camera again in a different thread.

This isn’t the same version of this image that was on Gowland’s site 3 years ago. Did anyone see that one?

Yes, the Gowland site is degrading, with far less information available

With this camera can shake even happen?

Mass and size does slow motion
