That would be a 3 series tripod from Gitzo. By the looks of it, this seems a video head.
I own the gear, but those don't make masterpieces. My everyday experience.
Its a 3 way head.
From what I've been able to glean, the R3 head is from the mid-80's. I don't think it would be for a modern Series 3. Looking at Gitzo spare parts, I'd guess it came from a "G" series.

A 3 series tripod, which will be labeled "Studex." Gray hammertone legs most probably.
I have a similar head but the smaller R. No. 2 and series 2 (Reporter) legs. Your head has longer handles on a couple of the controls, which might make it more video-friendly, but it's not a fluid head like they sell for video now. Also, there are two screws on the tlit mechanism, a main tilt handle and a tension adjust. Yours may have the handles swapped around - the longest handle, and the knob on the same piece of metal. I think you can just exchange them if you want.
Thanks for this - appreciate it.
I have a similar head. It's a three way not fluid.

The label says Gitzo 340 Brevete SGDG I believe it's the 1 1/2" diameter 4 Pro STudex Series about 35 years old.
