Thread: Epson V750 and V850

when you scan the film directly on the glass, I'm sure I read somewhere that focus plane is around 1/16th of an inch thick. Do some searches on here, lots of commentary about this in the past. You can get 24 for sure and it will look fine. Side by side up close an imacon or drum will look better but the difference will be small.

Chester, I've no opinion about if you should be taking pictures or learning how to scan, do what you want.

If you are interested in what I do today, I'm just unboxing a second 138S and finishing a new darkroom, RA-4 able, with an ATL2 and a 3m sink, also with reverse osmisis, a 38.5ºC heated tank for the ATL and fully HEPA filtration. One 138 will permanently point to the wall.

Do you know what is this ?

It is an scarce accessory to make the 138 point to the wall with 5x7" projection in landscape.

I have found the exact opposite to be true. I get way more newton rings placing film emulsion side down, then emulsion side up.

With emulsion down, you may still have rings with some color films because of some supercoatings and fine emulsions, but not with bw, in general. There are many posts in this site about that

Maybe you can adapt the fluid mount.

    Richard,
Approx six years ago, did a project that included some some 3 x 4 negs.
Had a a machinist friend create an adapter that fit into my 4 x 5 holder using machinsts plastic. that was 0.08 thick (available in other thickness', however this was the thinnest). What ever that machinists small industry pocket catalog is?
The plastic comes in standard 8 x 10 sheets.
Some machinists have a cutter that is water cooled.
If the Epson's offer an 8 x 10 holder you could cut an opening from the 8 x 10 sheets down to a sixteenth smaller than 5 x 7 (on edges) and use.
I did approx 1500 3x4's this way. The adapters heated up a little, however retained their strength and even went back to original flatness after cooling.
The home repair stores offer an 8 x 10 acrylic for just under $4.00, whether that would suffice is unknown.

Alan, thanks for that link. In the overall scale of things , that is really not a bad price.
Wilderness, thanks for the thoughts and idea. Most likely when I order the scanner I will get the optional wet mount film holder too. I’ll see how that works and go from there.
    Cheers Richard

My scanner is two generations older (4870, or something), and I discovered I could scan 5x7 with it. I made my own holder from 4-ply matte board. (Not that that would give me optimum focus.)

From the questions and answers section if you click on the Reviews link on the page.

Question: Can this this accommodate an 8x10 negative? The answers are contradictory.
Answer: No, it will not. The glass plate is only about 9.75" by 7.25" and the optimal scanning area is about 5.5" by 8.75". I believe the maximum practical standard size is 5x7, to allow enough room to fluid mount the negative with an oversize acetate sheet.

    Hi Chris,

No. The Epson Fluid Mount Accessory for V800 / V850 can be used to scan film up to 5 × 9 inches (127 × 229 mm). Hope this answers your inquiry. - The Epson Team

No, the actual area of the fluid mount is 7" x 9". The transparency area of the scanners that support the Fluid Mount (V700, V750, V800, V850) are 8" x 10", so film that size could be scanned on the scanner but not using the Fluid Mount. - The Epson Scanner Team
