It will make all the difference. I did it with the 8x10 norma I just acquired. The old grease was more of a beeswax texture. A little cleaning and adjustment of one of the fine focus locking mechanisms and it's now smooth as butter.

This has been mentioned on other threads, but worth repeating: Do not use WD-40 as a lubricant/grease for multiple reasons.

Phillip's tutorial covered 4x5 only, just be very careful studying the mechanism and assembly/reassembly.

Properly maintained it should be smooth as silk. Follow his guidance exactly, inept repair can mangle a Norma.

Thanks for this. My Norma could use a bit of maintenance and the videos especially will be really helpful.

I don’t have an 8x10 but purchased a new Norma 4x5 in 1969 and still have it and use it. I think I know where the manual and paper work is and will post relevant information if I locate it tomorrow. I think I still have the original container of grease, the lapel pin that came with it and the price list and brochure.

They’re great cameras as you know. I used it for many thousand catalog and product shot and it’s still almost like new.

For many years I had the 5x7 conversion kit and both bellows but sold the conversion kit on the forum a few years ago. I always wanted the 8x10 conversion kit but wound up with an 8x10 Deardorff, which I still have and use, due to portability on location. I replaced my 5x7 conversion with a Deardorff 5x7 / 4x5 special. Portability was a factor as is my age ;~)

For those interested, the Norma was the second most expensive monorail with the Linhof Kardan Bi tuning almost twice the price. I think I paid around $365 for the body and standard bellows in 1969 and later added the WA bellows, extension bellows, compendium holder and auxiliary frame as well as magnifier and several lengths of rail. I’ll post the prices too.
