I've noticed with a plasmat before that the focal length seems to be determined by the rear element, not really the front element. I learned this by using a lens where the rear element was off a 100mm and the front element a 150mm. Both elements were APO Sironar I believe, it made an image that looked normal, but it was 100mm, not 150mm or anywhere in between. Coverage was also about what you'd expect for the 100mm, kind of strange really. So maybe the theory of Nikon had some front-element backstock left isn't too far off.
