The OP might be better off with a 4x5 Crown Graphic, which will easily focus a 58/5.6 SAXL. I hesitate to suggest it, but a 4x5 Pacemaker Speed Graphic will also focus the lens to infinity. These and the Maleific aren't consistent with the OP's desire to build a camera from scratch.

Dan, in the DOF Master online calculator you may also set the particular CoC you want to consider:

Anyway those calculations are aproximated as each particular lens has a different Through Focus MTF behaviour.

Papi, the OP used Dofmaster's default CoC for 4x5. Its good for contact printing, not for enlarging. I don't care what the OP could have done. What it did got at best misleading results.

Of course, it was a good point. We have to be aware of what performance remains in the limits of the DOF field we consider...

Not even that, IMO, if one's eyesight is reasonably intact, one is sensitive to fine detail, and one enjoys contact prints by looking at them closely. If, if, if... but all those "ifs" just reinforce your point that effective use of DOF calculations requires understanding and thinking.

Shall we build on that discussion here or start a new thread?

I will open a new thread. Here it is.

Using DOF Calculations Bestly for Print Size
