Thread: In the Footsteps of Atget

    In the Footsteps of Atget

I spent two weeks in Paris making pictures. It was the first time I had brought an 8x10 view camera overseas and was indeed a transformative experience.

I live in Boston where I run a high school level photography program. We are a majority analog program so the darkroom is alive and well here. Our school is an all boys independent school and the program is well supported and thriving.

I’ve shot 8x10 for the last 8 years or so. In 2017 I completed an MFA in Photography from MassART where I studied under my mentor, Nick Nixon.

This work was generously supported by an alum of our school for which I am grateful and indebted to their belief in how this project can help our students.

I spent time rephotographing the work of Atget but also making new pictures inspired within a mindset of how Atget may have viewed Paris in our present day.

I’ll offer a mix of pictures and thoughts on the experience in a number of posts to come.

Thread moved into the large format image-sharing subforum.

+1 re seeing more - then-and-now photo-documentation always seems to resonate for me. And very interested too in any thoughts you'd like to share about the experience.

Great project, but shooting the "streetwalkers" like he did will be VERY different now... ;-)

    Some technical details:

    Camera: Wehman
    Lens: 210mm Graphic Kowa
    Film: HP5+ (50 sheets)
Tripod: RRS TVC33 with BH55 head
    Accessories: Meter, Cable Release, Darkcloth

All jammed into a NYC bike messenger bag. A reason for this: I didn’t want to risk the bag being weighed and gate checked. This bag, despite weighing about 36 lbs, looks light and passed every security check with ease.

I did not have the film hand checked, I let it go through the standard X-ray machines.

Changing film is the heat wave that struck Paris in late June made working conditions very difficult but it was all worth the effort.
