    Washers and Knobs

Anyone have a source for good knobs? I'd like to replace the rear ones on my Intrepid. McMaster Carr has a huge selection, but it's hard to tell what would be best from the specs.

Moving on to washers, my Intrepid has white plastic washers on the front standard. The movements really don't ever lock down. Do you have a suggestion for a washer material that would allow movement ok when the knobs are loosened, but which will provide more friction when locked down?

Depends a bit on what threading system they use in Merry Olde England.

McM has many knobs as you know now.

    Hard fiber washers.

I can't help with the knobs, but I had a similar problem with a Tahihara i used to own. I used fiber washers topped by thin stainless steel ones. I got them from—get ready—McMaster Carr. The only downside was that I had to buy a lot of them. Unfortunately I moved since then and they didn't make the trip, otherwise I would have been happy to send you some.

Surf for Nord-Lock washers. The current knobs will work better with them.

MCM knobs are cheap, i have bought some like below, but they also had OE knobs that were exact replacement for my ancient SC11 Dearford leg levelers a few years ago.

Knobs: I've been 3D printing them, designed in SketchUp and printed from various filaments (nylon, copolyester, polycarbonate). Then using a soldering iron to press in a brass threaded insert (from McMaster) for female threaded knob, or socket head cap screw for male threaded knob.

Side note: I work with architecture students who often want to make things, but have very little idea what the world of making things looks like. My first question: 'Do you know about McMaster-Carr?'
