    Standard TRUE size for 10x12"?

Kind of a weird sounding question, and I asked this in another thread but thought it best to start a new one.

What is the standard TRUE size of 10x12" film? I ask because Adox lists it as 9.45x12", with true 10x12" special order.

I'm wanting to build myself a camera and will build around a custom made holder from either Chamonix or Gibellini, but want to check this detail first.

    Thanks,

    Tim

Target sizes for the larger sheet-film formats are 1/16" smaller than the nominal dimensions, with some tolerance around that. 10x12 isn't any special exception to that.

Where are you seeing Adox listing 24x30.5cm film as "10x12"? It doesn't show that way in the Fotoimpex web store.

    Thanks.

They don’t list a 10x12” film as such, just a 9.45x12” film. I guess I found this odd because I thought 10x12” was the standard size. Then I also see paper doesn’t come in full 10x12” either, rather 9.45x12”. Just thought this was weird as a friend who shoots 10x12” measured his Ilford and Forte sheets and they were exactly 10x12”....

The standard dimensions *and* tolerances (important to note) are in ISO 1012:1998, "Photography - Films in sheets and rolls for general use - Dimensions". I can check my copy when I get home and will put it here.

I'd guess that 24x30.5 cm (9.45x12") is an old European standard. It's not intended to be the same thing as nor interchangeable with 10x12".

9.45 x 12" is a standard size in Europe. 10x12" in the US & UK They are not interchangeable in the holders.

Re: Standard TRUE size for 10x12"?

Thanks, I wondered if that was the case. I’ve asked Adox if and how often they cut to order. I’d prefer 10x12” as although only a small difference, I prefer the ratio.

Need now to think about the film holders and how to make a GG frame and back to match.

This inch measurement is really standard 24x30cm Continental plate/film size.
    The progression is 9x12, 13x18, 18x24, 24x30 and 30x40cm.
13x18cm is very close to 5x7" - the others have fractions of an inch.

Thank you for chiming in, Steven.

The question now remains... if I’m to build me own camera I will need to purchase some film holders. Chamonix and Gibellini can make them to order-they list as 10x12”-but what size is easiest to get film for? Adox seems committed to cutting custom size sheets quite regularly; but do Ilford cut either size on their special order program, or just true 10x12”?

Re: Standard TRUE size for 10x12"?

I have both 12x10" and 24x30cm cameras and matching holders. I have no doubt that 24x30cm - both in relation to X-ray film and current production - is far easier to get hold of than 12x10". I would not like to be dependent on Ilford's annual besoke production at (necessary) premium prices!

I have the additional dilemma of having both 15x12" and 30x40cm camera sets!
