Re: The Setup and the Shot

In the 1980s shot a cover shot of workers removing asbestos insulation. Shot was taken at an asbestos removal training center and the making of the shot was supervised by a certified instructor. Before going to press, the cover and inside article both checked off on by 2 instructors. When the magazine was published, we received many letters from readers commenting on the fact that the hands of the insulation removers were bare. Caused quite a situation to be reckoned with. As the photographer, I was blamed for this discrepancy.
Now they were suited up with 100% approved protective gear. As I remember their breathing apparatus and mask were the latest and best out there. Since asbestos cannot be absorbed by skin, yes the removal workers did indeed in practice use their bare hands to remove asbestos.
So... even when you get everything accurate and right with the setup, you just might the shot wrong.

I love this. It really shows how these cameras can transform a somewhat prosaic reality into a new thing.

I thought I'd toss one into the thread too. This is for working with some tiny flowers back in the Springtime. I used my 50 mm enlarger lens in the Toyo and three grid spots for illumination. The image is about a 5:1 magnification to the film, then a 2:1 onto the final print.
