Americana

I have what may be a broader definition of what is Americana, but I think this qualifies. There were more than 60 of these small ski hill operations in Idaho alone. This 1940s truck ran for more than 30 years running a tow rope, then broke down the week after I took the photo in 2007. The operator is also a hunting outfitter and had two young kids skiing on the slope.

My one and only shot from a 120 year old Kodak Panoram 4B (with all faults)
Light leak is fixed with rubber bands now, and next try will be with Ortho film to try to get a bit better focus with the limited lens system.

I'm very fond of the Doggie Diner Dog Heads, but somehow I've never photographed one. I have memories of going there in my youth, both in San Francisco and Alameda where I grew up. I'd forgotten there was one on Webster Street in Alameda until just now, thanks for reminding me!

Thanks, Roger -- came across them on Treasure Island...before they started the re-development of it. I had my three boys with me, but I have not printed any of the images of the boys with the doggies. I would have loved to have had the 8x10 with me!

A bit unsure where to post this, I decided that Memorial Day decorations count as "Americana." We have a number of similar wreaths near Madison and Florham Park, NJ, this one seemed to have the least intrusive background, and I was shooting with my 210/5.6 wide open to blur what background there was. I cropped the 4x5 negative scan since the sides weren't adding anything to the image, but I liked the landscape orientation better than a similar image I made in portrait format. HP5+, Pyrocat-HD, cropped and minor contrast adjustment in PS.
