So this would imply there already is an unwritten rule that nudes should be in the Nude thread or a thread that specifies the content could contain NSFW content? Perhaps this should be codified in "da rules." I seem to remember this same basic issue being discussed in the past.

You have missed the whole point, Rick. It is about objectification and the lack of respect - not creepiness. So it goes.

We’ve been unwilling to make a rule out of it, beyond the discretion we show in preventing the forum from being marked as a porn site by search engines, and in the general context of it being a family forum. (I’m also personally sensitive to the site content being declared off limits by our IT cops, and corporate IT types aren’t that much different than government IT people. They exercise discretion perhaps less thoughtfully than we try to.)

There really hasn’t been an issue.

But this is how the rules got so long. Rather than everyone being understanding when we exercise that discretion, some insist that it be a rule so that we have no discretion.

And I for one may variously define the term “nude” based on my judgment of how provocative is the content. That’s also part of discretion. I will have in mind that passing eye itching for something to be indignant about. Some legally clothed models are presented in a way that would get me, for one, in trouble if visible on the monitor. And some bona fide nakedness might not.

Given that it hasn’t really been an issue, I’m in favor of leaving it in the moderator discretion category. Will the members tolerate that? So far, they have. We have taken a pretty light touch on this.

Respect goes both ways, Vaughn. Some accusations of disrespect and objectification have been so tendentious as to themselves be disrespectful, especially in the way they are issued.

Boy does this cry-out for a political reply. What nonsense. Can you get your money back?

No -- it has been one-way in our society since the founding of the USA (and before, of course). Women as property, women not able to vote, women prevented from participating fully in business, women not given the same control of their bodies as men. I suggest learning how to be an ally to women.

The subject is highly problematized and not all separable from the objectification of the subject. One could counter with, what about Mapplethorpe, Sally Mann, and Jock Sturges? Sure, I do love their work, yet it is still controversial and many would say exploitive. I think that possible exploitation might make the work more interesting than it actually would be otherwise.

We are not going to have this debate here. It is intensely polarizing and thereby destructive of our purposes in this Forum.

I am going to close the thread.

    Right.
